Our Philosophy

Weddings

It is rewarding to know that after all these years, the S.C. Dixon signature in the lower corner of a bridal portrait is considered a mark of real prestige. It didn’t happen overnight.

When we purchased the old Granada Studio in 1973, S.C. Dixon photographed his first professional wedding under the tutelage of Udene Burnell, a prize winning portrait artist since 1931! It is a long tradition of the power of art.

We are very selective about the weddings we choose to accept into our schedule and it is not unusual for some dates to book as much as a year in advance, so we recommend to book your wedding photography early. You deserve the best, so call us today. We can answer many of your questions over the phone and we’ll mail you our comprehensive information pack, at no obligation, the same day.

When you contact us, you’ll receive not just prices but helpful information ranging from suggestions of when to shoot your portraits to tips on how to order, and good, down-to-earth advice on what to look for in a wedding portrait studio if we’re not available.

Pregnancy Portraits

A most special time in your life, for yourself, for your family…

  • WHEN: the ideal time is between the 30th and 32nd week, when bellies are big but the rest of the body hasn’t started to swell. Of course, this can actually be done right up to delivery day. As usual in portrait art, the best time is when you can make time.
  • EXPRESSIONS: smiles are great, but believe it or not, one of the best looks is a neutral facial expression with eyes closed! Most serene!
  • SPOUSES: can you include them? Of course! They are invited to watch the session or even to be a participant.
  • WHAT TO WEAR: whatever you want. We love the look of diaphanous fabrics like silk, net, or tulles. WE WILL NEVER COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY OR YOUR MODESTY, but nude works really well too. After all, we’re trying to emphasize the fact that you’re pregnant! Bring a robe; don’t wear underwear (it leaves red marks on the skin), don’t be afraid to wear jewelry, put your facial makeup on like you were going out for a special evening. Feel free to apply a bit of cover-up to any stretch marks, but don’t obsess about them. In the final photograph they can be smoothed nicely or completely eliminated.
  • I’M NOT SURE I LOOK “GOOD” ENOUGH: Pregnant women don’t necessarily always feel “beautiful.” You might feel sick, heavy, right down unattractive. But we’re going to present you as the epitome of the idealized beauty of a pregnant woman. Relax; you’re in skilled hands.
  • EYEGLASSES: they just don’t work that well in pregnancy photos. We often pose those who wear glasses with them propped up on their foreheads or held in a hand. If you really feel you need to wear them, give us a call. We’ve got a failsafe and FREE solution to some of the problems that eyeglasses cause in portrait art.
  • IS THIS FOR ME: probably so. Pregnancy is a part of life and portraits preserve the narrative of our lifetimes. It is not only perfectly appropriate, but it is actually becoming quite a fashionable thing to be photographed during pregnancy.
  • IS IT EXPENSIVE? That depends on your point of view. We’re going to take our time, use top notch equipment, take plenty of poses, do a lot of corrective work, and present you with finished portraits that are 100% guaranteed to be state-of-the-art, exhibit grade art. All of this by a photographer who has of 30 years experience and a reputation for top quality creations based on a studio that was founded more than 75 years ago! The session fee is $150; payable on the day the appointment is made. We allot a full 2 hours to your portrait session, though it rarely takes more than 45 minutes or so. Prints are available at our standard, page one pricing, a copy of which will be given to you when you set up your appointment or we will be happy to mail a copy to you at any time.

Portraits

You and your loved ones change, it’s inevitable. Family and individual portraits capture a moment in time. At our studios we can help you to preserve your moments and your memories.

How often you want to capture these memories is up to you. If you have young children, they change almost daily. We feel that portraits should be done with some regularity, at least every five years .

We do realize that such a project is hard to organize. We know that your whole family is most able to get together on special occasions. What better time to preserve the moment? We do not charge extra to schedule family portraits on weekends or holidays.

Quality portrait art is not inexpensive. Quality is what we do best and we know that the moments of your life, and the memories of your loved ones, are beyond price.

Call us and we will work with you to create a special time for you and your family.

We advise families, if possible, to split the expense. As a suggestion, divide up the cost of the photo session and let each group order their own portraits to match their taste and budget.
